FAQs
Solar
How much do solar panels cost in Scotland? +
A typical 4kWp domestic solar system in Scotland costs £6,500-£8,500 fully installed, including inverter, scaffolding, MCS certification and grid notification. Add a 5kWh battery and the total typically lands between £10,500 and £13,500. We provide fixed-price quotes — no scope creep.
Do solar panels work in Scottish weather? +
Yes. Modern solar PV generates from daylight, not direct sun. Our Livingston-based monitoring shows average annual yields of 880-905 kWh per kWp installed across the Central Belt — within 5% of the UK average. We model your roof's specific yield before quoting.
Will I need planning permission for solar panels in Scotland? +
For most domestic properties, no — solar PV is permitted development under Scottish planning rules. Exceptions apply for listed buildings, conservation areas (common in Edinburgh New Town and Linlithgow), and some new-build developer-controlled estates. We run pre-app checks on every job.
How long does a solar install take? +
Typical domestic install is 1-2 days on site, with the full process (survey, design, DNO notification, install, commissioning, MCS certificate) running 2-4 weeks from order. Commercial installs vary by size; we publish a per-project timeline at survey.
What warranty comes with solar panels? +
Our JA Solar all-black panels carry a 30-year linear performance warranty and 25-year product warranty. EcoFlow PowerOcean inverters: 10 years standard. Ecoaim provides a 5-year workmanship warranty covering all install labour and weatherproofing.
How long is the payback on solar in Scotland? +
Payback periods in our service area typically run 7-9 years for solar-only, 8-11 years with battery. Faster paybacks come from high-export tariffs (Octopus Flux, SEG rates) and high daytime self-consumption.
Battery
Which battery brands does Ecoaim install? +
We are a Tesla Powerwall certified installer, EcoFlow PowerOcean partner, and also fit GivEnergy and Sigenergy systems. We recommend brand based on use-case, not commission.
Can I add a battery to an existing solar system? +
Yes — AC-coupled batteries retrofit cleanly onto any existing solar install. We carry out a free electrical compatibility check and DNO notification. Typical retrofit time on site: 1 day.
How big a battery do I need? +
For typical 4-bed homes in our service area, 5-10 kWh covers evening loads. With Octopus Flux tariff arbitrage, 10-13 kWh maximises return. Our battery sizing tool models your usage profile against tariff windows.
Will a battery keep my lights on in a power cut? +
Only batteries with EPS (Emergency Power Supply) function provide backup. Tesla Powerwall 3 and Sigenergy have built-in EPS; some EcoFlow variants do too. We confirm backup capability per system at quote.
EV
Is the OZEV grant still available? +
The OZEV EV chargepoint grant remains available for renters, flat-owners and landlords. The Workplace Charging Scheme offers £350 per socket up to 40 sockets. Both are subject to current rules — we confirm eligibility before install.
Do you install commercial DC chargers? +
Yes — we install AC and DC commercial chargers up to 360kW, including Pelican, AE Auto and partner brands. We handle DNO G99 applications, half-hourly metering, and back-office tariff integration.
Grants
What is the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan? +
Home Energy Scotland offers a grant of up to £7,500 (£9,000 for rural homes) for renewable heat, combined with an interest-free loan of up to £7,500. For solar PV the loan-only is up to £6,000. We handle the application and provide quotes that meet HES criteria.
Do you handle ECO4 applications? +
Yes — for qualifying households (means-tested), ECO4 can fund up to 100% of solar, ASHP and insulation. We work with approved installers and submit applications on your behalf.
