Home Energy Scotland withdrew grant and interest-free loan funding for domestic solar PV and battery storage on 6 June 2024, and it has not been reinstated. Any quote or advert still promising an HES loan for panels or a battery is out of date. What Scottish solar customers can genuinely use today:
- 0% VAT on qualifying domestic installations until 31 March 2027.
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments for the electricity you export.
- HES grant and interest-free loan where the project includes a heat pump — for the heat pump element.
- Ideal4Finance (FRN 703401) lender finance, subject to status — commercial credit, not a government scheme.
Available grants
The Home Energy Scotland loan is a Scottish Government interest-free loan for clean heating and energy-efficiency upgrades to homes in Scotland, administered by Energy Saving Trust. IMPORTANT: funding for solar PV and battery storage was withdrawn on 6 June 2024 and has not been reinstated, so the loan no longer covers panels or batteries. Current loan caps: heat pump (air/ground/water source), biomass or heat network up to £7,500; solid wall insulation up to £2,500; loft, cavity or underfloor insulation up to £500; solar thermal or hybrid solar PV-T water heating up to £5,000. Each of these can sit alongside an HES grant. Repayment is over 5-12 years depending on amount, and the loan carries a 1.5% administration fee capped at £150.
The HES grant is a Scottish Government grant primarily covering renewable heat measures — air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and biomass — for homes in Scotland. Rural properties (defined by postcode) qualify for a higher £9,000 cap.
Warmer Homes Scotland is the Scottish Government scheme for older, vulnerable or fuel-poor households. Delivered by Warmworks Scotland (the appointed contractor) — Ecoaim works alongside the scheme rather than direct delivery.
