Which upgrade first? A decision guide for Scottish homes
A sensible default is to work in this order. No step is compulsory, but each one changes the size, and the case, for the next.
- Cut heat loss first. Insulation shrinks the heat pump you may fit later. Home Energy Scotland funds loft, cavity and underfloor insulation where your EPC recommends it, with a grant of up to £1,500 and an interest-free loan of up to £500 (1.5% fee, capped at £150). See our insulation work.
- Then solar panels. The Energy Saving Trust's 2026 modelling found solar the most predictable of the three main technologies. In our Central Belt worked example, a south-facing 4 kWp system costing £6,500–£8,500 saves about £659 a year, a simple payback of roughly 10–13 years. Start with solar panel installation.
- A battery when your tariff can use it. On a flat tariff, a 5 kWh battery adds only about £118 a year in that same example, so its case rests on a time-of-use tariff. Compare home battery storage with solar panels with battery storage.
- A heat pump when the boiler is due. Not having to buy a new boiler is one of the biggest swings in heat pump payback, and homes heated by electricity have the strongest case. See air source heat pump installation, and how solar panels and a heat pump work together.
- An EV charger when the car arrives. It is the one item on this list that isn't zero-rated for VAT. See EV charger installation.
Two things move a step up the list: a failing boiler brings the heat pump forward, and scaffolding going up for roof repairs is the time to add solar.
One survey covers the whole house
One visit can cover everything on that list: the roof, shading and access for panels; the loft and walls; radiators, cylinder space and where an outdoor unit could go; the consumer unit and main fuse; and the route for a charger cable. Even if you only buy solar this year, the design can leave room for a battery or heat pump later, so the inverter and consumer unit don't have to be redone later.
Funding at a glance
- 0% VAT on qualifying insulation, solar panels, batteries and heat pumps installed in homes until 31 March 2027, then 5%.
- Home Energy Scotland grants and interest-free loans for heat pumps and insulation, including up to £7,500 grant plus up to £7,500 loan for a heat pump, and a £1,500 grant uplift for eligible rural and island homes. Loans carry a 1.5% fee, capped at £150.
- Warmer Homes Scotland for eligible households, such as those receiving qualifying benefits: usually fully funded, with the work carried out by Warmworks' installers.
- Smart Export Guarantee payments for the solar electricity you export.
- Lender finance through Ideal4Finance, a credit broker, subject to status.

- Call back and free survey. We ask what you want to change, then survey the house, with no obligation.
- Written, itemised quote, with the order of works if you're phasing it.
- Funding first for a heat pump. You apply to Home Energy Scotland with an itemised quote, and nothing starts until the written offer arrives.
- Network paperwork. Solar and batteries go through G98 notification or G99 approval with your network operator; a heat pump is notified too.
- Installation. Solar usually takes one to two days on site, a heat pump around three.
- Handover. MCS certificates, warranty documents, app set-up, and a walk-through of the controls and the tariff that suits them.
