Why agricultural solar works so well in Scotland
Scottish farms are some of the most natural homes for solar PV in the UK. Why?
- Large roof surfaces — modern barns, parlours and storage units give you 500m²+ of mounting area without planning headaches.
- Daytime loads — milking, refrigeration, ventilation, grain drying all peak in daylight hours, aligning perfectly with solar generation curves.
- Three-phase supplies — most working farms already have three-phase, removing a major barrier to >10kWp installs.
- Capital allowances — the 50% first-year allowance on solar PV plus battery storage continues into 2026, dramatically improving CapEx IRR.

The economics
A typical 150kWp agricultural ground-mount in our service area:
- Install cost: £130,000–£165,000
- Annual generation: 135,000–145,000 kWh
- Self-consumption (parlour/refrigeration-heavy farms): 65–75%
- Annual saving + export revenue: £28,000–£35,000
- Payback: 4.5–6 years
- Capital allowance tax saving (year 1): £20,000–£28,000
Combined with HES grant routes for connected farmhouses and the agricultural cottages, the maths becomes obvious.
Common questions from farmers
"Can I put solar on a listed steading?" Often yes — rear or barn-roof installs avoid most planning constraints. We pre-app every job.
"Do I need to be three-phase?" For >10kWp, yes typically. Single-phase upgrades are quoted alongside the solar.
"What about agricultural insurance?" We coordinate with NFU Mutual and Cornish Mutual on most agricultural installs.
