In-roof vs on-roof — what's the difference?

On-roof: Panels sit on rails ~5cm above your existing tiles. The cheapest, fastest install.

In-roof: Panels integrate into the roof, replacing tiles in the array footprint. Flush look, watertight in-system flashing.

When in-roof wins

• Conservation areas — planners almost always prefer in-roof for visual impact
• Listed buildings — sometimes the only approvable option
• New builds — designed in at construction; minimal additional cost vs on-roof
• Aesthetics — homeowners who care about how the array looks from the street
• Front-of-roof installs — visual flush integration matters more than rear-roof

When on-roof wins

• Retrofit on most existing homes — cheaper, faster, no tile loss
• Slate roofs — on-roof with slate-hooks is cleaner and lower-risk
• Maintenance access — easier to lift a panel for service

Cost difference

In-roof typically adds £400–£900 to a 4kWp domestic install (panels are the same; the integration kit + extra labour adds the premium). On a new build it can actually save money vs on-roof if the roof tiles are subtracted from the original spec.
