Yes. Modern solar PV generates from daylight, not direct sun. Our Livingston-based monitoring shows average annual yields of 880-905 kWh per kWp installed across the Central Belt — within 5% of the UK average. We model your roof's specific yield before quoting.

For most domestic properties, no — solar PV is permitted development under Scottish planning rules. Exceptions apply for listed buildings, conservation areas (common in Edinburgh New Town and Linlithgow), and some new-build developer-controlled estates. We run pre-app checks on every job.

Typical domestic install is 1-2 days on site, with the full process (survey, design, DNO notification, install, commissioning, MCS certificate) running 2-4 weeks from order. Commercial installs vary by size; we publish a per-project timeline at survey.

Our JA Solar all-black panels carry a 30-year linear performance warranty and 25-year product warranty. EcoFlow PowerOcean inverters: 10 years standard. Ecoaim provides a 5-year workmanship warranty covering all install labour and weatherproofing.

Payback periods in our service area typically run 7-9 years for solar-only, 8-11 years with battery. Faster paybacks come from high-export tariffs (Octopus Flux, SEG rates) and high daytime self-consumption.

A two or three-bedroom home using up to roughly 3,500 kWh a year usually suits 4 kWp: 9 or 10 of the 435 W panels we fit, on roughly 18–20 m² of roof. Homes with an EV or a heat pump usually need around 8 kWp.

Usually not on a house. West Lothian Council's guidance, for example, is that roof panels on a single or two-storey house need no warrant if the roof can carry the load; strengthening work does need one. Check flats with the council's building standards team.

Planning is only part of it. Permitted development has covered flats since May 2024, but a tenement roof is usually owned in common, so you are likely to need every co-owner's agreement. Check your title deeds first.

South is best. On PVGIS figures for Edinburgh, an east or west roof at the same pitch produces about a fifth less and a north-facing one roughly half. We will tell you at survey if your roof is not worth doing.

Yes — AC-coupled batteries retrofit cleanly onto any existing solar install. We carry out a free electrical compatibility check and DNO notification. Typical retrofit time on site: 1 day.

For typical 4-bed homes in our service area, 5-10 kWh covers evening loads. With Octopus Flux tariff arbitrage, 10-13 kWh maximises return. Our battery sizing tool models your usage profile against tariff windows.

Only batteries with EPS (Emergency Power Supply) function provide backup. Tesla Powerwall 3 and Sigenergy have built-in EPS; some EcoFlow variants do too. We confirm backup capability per system at quote.

Many carry a 10-year warranty. Panels can last 25 years or more, so plan to replace the battery at least once over a solar system's life.

No. A standalone battery charges from the grid in a cheap overnight window and runs your home through the expensive evening hours. It needs a time-of-use tariff to pay its way, and the 0% VAT rate applies to it too.

Yes. PAS 63100 treats outside as the best place, if the unit is rated for outdoor use and sits at least a metre from doors, windows, vents and escape routes. Check its charging temperature range: some lithium batteries charge only above 0°C.

Spare solar power then flows to the grid as export. An export tariff pays for it if your system is MCS-certified and you have a smart meter.

Yes, until 31 March 2027, which the government has described as a final year. Renters and flat owners with private off-street parking can get 75% off a chargepoint, up to £500, and residential landlords up to £500 per socket. The Workplace Charging Scheme offers businesses, charities and public bodies up to £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets. All are subject to current rules, so we confirm eligibility first, and a home chargepoint must not be fitted until OZEV confirms the grant.

Yes — we install AC and DC commercial chargers up to 360kW, including Pelican, AE Auto and partner brands. We handle the DNO connection application (plus G98 or G99 where the site also has battery storage or solar), half-hourly metering, and back-office tariff integration.

Two main ones, if you rent, own a flat, or live in a rural postcode on a household income of £50,000 or less. OZEV gives renters and flat owners with private off-street parking 75% off, up to £500, until 31 March 2027, but owners of houses don't qualify. Energy Saving Trust's 2026/27 Scottish grant offers up to £400 for homes in rural and remote postcodes. Both need approval before any installation work starts.

Yes, every one. If the installer's assessment shows the home stays at 60A per phase or less on a supply known to be adequate, the charger can be fitted and the network operator told within 28 days. A looped supply, a doubtful cut-out or higher demand means applying first and waiting for the go-ahead. Your installer normally submits the form for you.

Yes, with a charger that has a solar or surplus mode, but mostly from spring to early autumn. A car needs about 1.4kW of spare power to start charging on a single-phase supply, and a south-facing 4 kWp array near Livingston produces roughly 440 kWh in June but only around 76 kWh in December, according to PVGIS. The practical setup is solar charging in summer and an overnight EV tariff in winter.

On a retrofit by a VAT-registered installer, yes. VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates listed energy-saving materials such as home solar panels and batteries until 31 March 2027, and EV chargers are not on that list. Compare quotes on the same VAT basis.

Home Energy Scotland offers a grant of up to £7,500 (£9,000 for rural and island homes) for renewable heat — air, ground or water source heat pumps, biomass and heat network connections — combined with an interest-free loan of up to £7,500 on the same measure. Insulation is funded separately: up to £7,500 grant and £2,500 loan for solid wall, and £1,500 grant and £500 loan for loft, cavity and underfloor. The loan is 0% interest but carries a 1.5% administration fee capped at £150 per application. You apply through a Home Energy Scotland adviser; we help with the quote and paperwork your application needs.

Not from Home Energy Scotland. HES withdrew grant and interest-free loan funding for domestic solar PV and battery storage on 6 June 2024 and it has not been reinstated, so any offer of an HES loan for panels or a battery is out of date. What does still apply: 0% VAT on qualifying domestic installations until 31 March 2027, Smart Export Guarantee payments for the electricity you export, and the HES grant and loan for the heat pump element if your project includes one. Solar thermal and hybrid solar PV-T water heating remain loan-eligible up to £5,000 — a standard PV array does not qualify. Lender finance through Ideal4Finance (FRN 703401) is also available subject to status, but that is commercial credit, not a government scheme.

No. From 6 June 2024 Home Energy Scotland ended funding for solar PV and batteries, with or without a heat pump. The heat pump itself can still get a grant of up to £7,500 and an optional loan of up to £7,500, while the panels are paid for separately, with 0% VAT on both until 31 March 2027.

Not from Home Energy Scotland, which stopped funding batteries along with solar PV on 6 June 2024. A home battery carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, whether it's added to existing panels or fitted on its own. The UK Warm Homes Loan Scheme lists batteries as eligible, but no participating lenders had been named when we checked in October 2026.

Homeowners in Scotland who live in the property as their only or primary home, and the property must already exist. You don't need to be on benefits. Private landlords use a separate Home Energy Scotland landlord loan instead, and businesses go to Business Energy Scotland's SME Loan Scheme.

Homes in remote rural and island areas, and off-gas homes in accessible rural areas, can add £1,500 to the heating grant and £1,500 to the energy efficiency grant. That takes the heat pump grant from £7,500 to £9,000. Home Energy Scotland's advisers confirm whether your address qualifies under the Scottish Government's urban-rural classification.

You pick the term within a cap that depends on how much you borrow: a loan below £5,000 can run for up to five years, one between £5,000 and £9,999 for up to ten, and anything over £10,000 for up to twelve. No interest is charged, but there's a 1.5% administration fee capped at £150 per application, and Home Energy Scotland runs credit and affordability checks first. Repayments start once you've received a payment that includes loan funds.

No. Home Energy Scotland won't fund any installation that starts before you receive its written offer, and it doesn't backdate funding. Get your quotes, apply, wait for the offer, then book the install; for a heat pump you'll also need the MCS certificate to claim.

It can. Its official list of improvements includes "installing a home renewables system" alongside insulation and heating without naming solar panels or batteries, and the Scottish Government counted 957 solar PV or battery storage installs under it in 2024-25. What a household gets depends on the Warmworks assessment, and only eligible households qualify, for example those on certain benefits. You apply through Home Energy Scotland.

The zero rate on installing solar panels, batteries and heat pumps in homes runs until 31 March 2027, and installations supplied from 1 April 2027 pay 5%. On our typical prices that adds £325 to £425 to a 4 kWp solar system. The relief only applies when the installer supplies and fits the equipment.

Yes. In the Electrification of Heat trial, which included Scottish homes, air source heat pumps still delivered a median 2.44 units of heat per unit of electricity on days averaging −6°C. MCS designs are sized for your area's winter design temperature.

Home Energy Scotland's average is £13,000 installed for an air-to-water heat pump, or £5,500 after its £7,500 grant. Radiators, the cylinder and electrical work move that either way, so an itemised quote after a survey is the reliable number.

Usually not. Most installations are permitted development under Class 6H if the unit passes the MCS 020 noise standard and the siting limits, including one heat pump per building. World Heritage Sites, listed buildings and some conservation-area positions need an application.

Possibly in some rooms. Heat pumps run radiators at lower temperatures, often 35–45°C, so the survey checks each room. Some radiators may already be big enough, and others can often be swapped for double or triple panels on the same wall.

It depends on the tariff. With electricity costing about 3.3 times as much as gas under the current cap, a typical heat pump on a standard tariff can cost slightly more to run than a new gas boiler; a heat pump time-of-use tariff can bring it below.

It is possible, with two catches. Permitted development allows only one air source heat pump per building, so later units in a block need planning permission, and air-to-air units don't qualify for the Home Energy Scotland grant.

Home Energy Scotland expects a well-maintained heat pump to last 20 years or more, against about 15 for a boiler. Book a service once a year, as you would for a boiler.

Before a heat pump, yes where you can, because lower heat loss means a smaller unit and lower running costs. Solar panels don't depend on insulation, so they can go first if that suits your budget.

Yes. Mention it at the first survey so the inverter and consumer unit are chosen with it in mind. A battery can be added later, either AC-coupled or through a hybrid inverter.

Qualifying insulation, solar panels, batteries and heat pumps installed in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. EV chargers aren't on HMRC's list of energy-saving materials, so the relief doesn't cover them.

For Home Energy Scotland insulation funding, yes, and the EPC must recommend the measure. You can apply for heat pump funding without one.

Fitting solar is usually a one- or two-day job, plus any wait for G99 approval on larger systems. For a heat pump, Home Energy Scotland aims to process a complete application within 10 working days, and installation then takes around three days.
