The HES grant is a Scottish Government grant primarily covering renewable heat measures — air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and biomass — for homes in Scotland. Rural properties (defined by postcode) qualify for a higher £9,000 cap.

Common questions
What does the HES grant cover? +
Primarily air source heat pumps (£7,500), ground source (£7,500), biomass (£7,500). Rural uplift adds £1,500 to each.
Is my property rural for HES purposes? +
HES uses the Scottish Government Urban-Rural Classification. Most of West Lothian, Falkirk and the Central Belt are urban; outer parts of Fife and Lanarkshire often qualify as rural.
Can I stack the HES grant with the loan? +
Yes — for a heat pump you can take up to £7,500 as a grant plus an optional £7,500 interest-free loan, with a further £1,500 grant uplift in eligible rural and island areas. Insulation has its own separate limits. We model the optimal combination for your install at quote.
Does the grant cover solar PV? +
No — and neither does the loan. Home Energy Scotland withdrew funding for solar PV and battery storage on 6 June 2024 and it has not been reinstated, so no HES grant or loan covers panels or batteries. The scheme now focuses on clean heating and insulation. Solar customers still get 0% VAT on qualifying installs until 31 March 2027 and Smart Export Guarantee payments.
