The Home Energy Scotland loan is a Scottish Government interest-free loan for clean heating and energy-efficiency upgrades to homes in Scotland, administered by Energy Saving Trust. IMPORTANT: funding for solar PV and battery storage was withdrawn on 6 June 2024 and has not been reinstated, so the loan no longer covers panels or batteries. Current loan caps: heat pump (air/ground/water source), biomass or heat network up to £7,500; solid wall insulation up to £2,500; loft, cavity or underfloor insulation up to £500; solar thermal or hybrid solar PV-T water heating up to £5,000. Each of these can sit alongside an HES grant. Repayment is over 5-12 years depending on amount, and the loan carries a 1.5% administration fee capped at £150.

Who is eligible for the HES loan? +

Any homeowner in Scotland whose property will be the primary residence. Income-based caps do not apply for the loan. Landlords have a separate scheme.

How long does HES loan approval take? +

Typically 4-8 weeks from full application to approval. We handle the paperwork on your behalf and provide MCS-compliant quotes that meet HES criteria.

Do I have to repay if I move house? +

Yes — the loan is to the homeowner, not the property. Most borrowers repay over the agreed term regardless.

Can I combine HES loan with the HES grant? +

Yes — for a heat pump you can take up to £7,500 as a grant plus an optional £7,500 as an interest-free loan, with a further £1,500 grant uplift available in eligible rural and island areas. Insulation has its own separate grant and loan limits.

Is the loan really interest-free? +

Yes — 0% APR, so no interest is charged. It is not entirely cost-free: there is a 1.5% administration fee capped at £150 per application. Beyond that you repay only the principal.

Does the HES loan cover solar panels or a battery? +

No. Home Energy Scotland stopped funding solar PV and battery storage for new applicants on 6 June 2024, and it has not been reinstated — so there is no HES grant or loan for panels or batteries. Solar customers can still benefit from 0% VAT on qualifying installations until 31 March 2027 and Smart Export Guarantee export payments, and if the project also includes a heat pump, the heat-pump element can still qualify for HES support.
