Solar panels in Lanarkshire
Lanarkshire is two council areas and fifteen towns we install in, from Cumbernauld and Coatbridge down the M74 to Larkhall and out to Carnwath. A south-facing kilowatt-peak here makes about 855–873 kWh a year on PVGIS figures, a 4 kWp system costs £6,500–£8,500 fitted with 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and every ML and G postcode we checked is in SP Energy Networks' area.
The fifteen Lanarkshire towns we cover
Lanarkshire splits into two councils with quite different housing. North Lanarkshire is dense former-industrial towns along the M8, M73 and M80 — a lot of post-war semis and ex-local-authority stock with straightforward rear roofs. South Lanarkshire runs from Rutherglen and Cambuslang on Glasgow's edge, through Hamilton and East Kilbride, out along the M74 into rural Clydesdale, where you get everything from 1960s new-town housing to stone cottages and steadings.

What a Lanarkshire roof actually generates
These are PVGIS averages for one kilowatt-peak facing due south at 35°, with 14% system losses. Lanarkshire sits slightly below the east-coast figures — the west is wetter, and Clydesdale is higher ground — which is worth knowing before you compare a quote written against a national average.
| Town | kWh per kWp per year | A 4 kWp array | June | December |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton | 873 | 3,492 kWh | 111.6 | 19.4 |
| Motherwell | 869 | 3,476 kWh | 110.7 | 19.4 |
| East Kilbride | 865 | 3,460 kWh | 111.5 | 18.8 |
| Lanark | 855 | 3,420 kWh | 109.2 | 18.5 |

December is the number that decides whether you want storage: about 18.5 kWh per kilowatt-peak for the whole month at Lanark, against 109 in June. A battery in Lanarkshire earns its winter keep from a time-of-use tariff, not from the roof — which is why we size storage from your evening usage first, using the solar battery size calculator.
Costs, and what moves them here
Our installed ranges are £6,500–£8,500 for 4 kWp, £10,500–£13,500 with a 5 kWh battery and £15,000–£19,000 for 8 kWp with 10 kWh, all including 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. The wider picture, with a worked savings example, is in our guide to the cost of solar panels in Scotland, and there is a Lanarkshire-specific breakdown in our Lanarkshire solar cost guide.
Two things move Lanarkshire quotes more than anything else. Terraces and ex-council semis often have simple, unshaded rear roofs, which keeps scaffolding and labour down. Rural Clydesdale properties are the opposite case: longer cable runs, older consumer units and sometimes a three-phase supply that changes which inverter we specify.
Funding: no council grant, and no HES money for panels
Neither North nor South Lanarkshire Council runs a solar grant, and Home Energy Scotland stopped funding solar PV and batteries on 6 June 2024. What is real:
- 0% VAT on qualifying domestic installations until 31 March 2027
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments for the electricity you export
- HES grant and interest-free loan when the project includes a heat pump — for the heat pump element
Grid connection across ML and G postcodes
We checked ML1, ML3, ML11, G72 and G74 against the grid supply point register on 25 September 2026, and all of them sit in the South Scotland group — SP Energy Networks. A system whose inverters export no more than 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) connects on a G98 notification; anything larger needs a G99 application approved first, and the battery is part of the same application rather than a separate one.
Doing solar and EV charging in one visit
Most Lanarkshire houses that want solar also want a charger eventually, and doing both at once saves a second set of scaffolding, a second connection application and a second day of electrical work. Our EV charger installers in Lanarkshire page sets out which OZEV grant applies to which property — including the fact that homeowners in houses have not been eligible since April 2022.

Solar panels in Lanarkshire: questions
How much electricity do solar panels generate in Lanarkshire?
PVGIS puts a south-facing kilowatt-peak at about 873 kWh a year in Hamilton, 869 in Motherwell, 865 in East Kilbride and 855 at Lanark, so a 4 kWp array makes roughly 3,420 to 3,490 kWh. That is a little below the Fife and Edinburgh figures — western Scotland is wetter, and upper Clydesdale sits higher — but comfortably enough for a sound return.
Which council do I deal with for solar in Lanarkshire?
North Lanarkshire Council covers Cumbernauld, Airdrie, Coatbridge, Motherwell, Wishaw, Bellshill and Shotts; South Lanarkshire Council covers Hamilton, East Kilbride, Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Larkhall, Carluke and the Clydesdale villages. For most domestic rooftop solar it makes no difference, because it is permitted development — the council only comes into it for listed buildings and conservation areas.
Who is the network operator for solar in Lanarkshire?
SP Energy Networks. We checked ML1, ML3, ML11, G72 and G74 against the grid supply point register on 25 September 2026 and every one returned the South Scotland group. Systems above 16 A per phase need a G99 application approved before connection, which we submit.
Is there a Lanarkshire solar grant?
No. Neither council runs a solar grant, and Home Energy Scotland stopped funding solar PV and batteries on 6 June 2024. The real support is 0% VAT on installation until 31 March 2027 and Smart Export Guarantee payments for what you export — plus Home Energy Scotland funding for a heat pump if one is part of the project.
Do you install solar and EV charging together in Lanarkshire?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper to do both on one visit because the connection application, the scaffolding and the electrical work overlap. Our EV charger installers in Lanarkshire page covers the charger side, including which OZEV grant applies to your property.
