The maths for a typical Bathgate 4-bed
- Install cost: £7,500 (4kWp solar only)
- Annual generation: 3,600 kWh
- Self-consumed (50%, typical for a home occupied part of the day): 1,800 kWh × 26.11p = £470 (the Ofgem price cap for South Scotland, October to December 2026)
- Exported (50%): 1,800 kWh × 12p = £216 (Octopus Outgoing, since 1 March 2026)
- First-year saving: ~£686
- Simple payback: ~10.9 years at current prices, before panel degradation, price changes and maintenance such as an inverter replacement
Add a battery — better economics
A 10kWh battery added to the same 4kWp solar lets you use more of the generation yourself (how much depends on your usage), and a time-of-use tariff such as Octopus Flux can add to the savings through peak-time export.
