Edinburgh: not as solar-tough as people think
Edinburgh has a reputation for being a solar-tough city — tenements, listed buildings, conservation areas. There's truth in that, but it's overstated.
A majority of Edinburgh residential properties are solar-installable. Where it gets nuanced is which Edinburgh property.
The video install
A typical Edinburgh detached / semi install — 4-6kWp residential setup, standard tile roof, standard scaffolding. The kind of install that runs 1-2 days on site with no complications.
Where Edinburgh gets interesting
Conservation areas (lots of them): New Town (EH3), Old Town (EH1), Stockbridge (EH3), Marchmont (EH9), Trinity (EH5). Solar PV is *usually* permitted but front-of-roof installs need pre-app clearance. We run pre-app on every conservation-area job.
Listed buildings: Category B is most common in central Edinburgh. Front-of-roof solar is normally refused; rear-roof or in-roof can sometimes be approved. We're realistic at survey — if it won't get permission, we say so.
Tenement properties: Shared roof, shared ownership — written consent from all close owners is mandatory. We draft the consent forms.
Suburban Edinburgh (EH4, EH10, EH14, EH16, EH17): Standard work. The cheaper, faster end of the £6,500-£8,500 range.
