An AC charger is the wall-mounted unit that takes alternating current from your home supply and feeds it to your EV’s onboard converter — in the UK that’s 3kW, 7.4kW on a single-phase supply or 22kW on three-phase, all using a Mode 3 Type 2 connection. For 95% of UK homes, a 7.4kW smart AC charger fully charges most EVs overnight on a cheap off-peak tariff for around 2p–10p per kWh, fitted by an OZEV-style certified installer for a typical £800–£1,200. Renters and flat owners with off-street parking are eligible for a £350 EV Chargepoint Grant, live until 31 March 2027.

AC vs DC charging in one line: AC chargers send mains alternating current to the car (the car converts it), while DC fast chargers (the 50–350kW units at motorway services) bypass the car’s converter entirely and push direct current straight into the battery. AC is what every UK home gets; DC is the public-network forecourt economy. Almost every home or workplace charger sold in Britain is AC because UK domestic supplies are AC — and a domestic DC unit would cost tens of thousands and need a transformer-grade DNO connection.

A standard UK 100A single-phase supply happily runs a 7.4kW charger — that’s the install we quote for the vast majority of Central Belt homes. Three-phase (415V) supplies are common in new-build estates, commercial premises and some rural Scotland properties. If you’re unsure, the meter cabinet tells the story: count the meter tails. We confirm phase at the free survey, and if you need a three-phase upgrade we co-ordinate with the DNO on your behalf.

Watch-out: many EVs cap AC charging below 22kW. Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Polestar 2 accept 11kW; older Nissan Leafs cap at 6.6kW; Renault Zoe is the rare EV that accepts the full 22kW AC. We check your specific car at survey.

Mode 3, Type 2, tethered vs untethered — the terminology that matters

Mode 3 is the IEC 61851-1 standard for AC charging through a dedicated wall unit that talks to the car (as opposed to Mode 1 / Mode 2 trickle-charging through a household socket). Every modern UK home AC charger is Mode 3. Type 2 (Mennekes / IEC 62196-2) is the connector — a seven-pin socket that has been the EU and UK standard since 2014. Every current EV sold in the UK except the older Nissan Leaf has a Type 2 inlet.

Tethered chargers have a captive cable permanently attached — you grab the plug, plug it in, walk away. Quicker day-to-day, but the cable length (usually 5m or 7.5m) is fixed and a damaged cable means a service call. Untethered chargers are a socket only — you carry the cable in the boot and plug both ends in each time. More flexible (any length, replaceable, dual-Type 2 friendly), slightly more faff. We quote both — the right answer depends on your driveway layout and whether you might switch to a Type 1 vehicle later.

UK smart-charger law — the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021

Since 30 June 2022 it has been illegal to sell or install a non-smart EV charger for home or workplace use in Great Britain. The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021 mandate seven things — default off-peak charging windows, a randomised delay function (to spread grid load), data privacy controls, cyber-security against unauthorised remote access, demand-side response capability, a measurement system, and continued operation if the charger loses internet. The point is a national grid that survives 30 million EVs without rolling brown-outs, and a consumer who saves serious money by charging when wholesale electricity is cheap.

Installation requirements — BS 7671 Section 722, RCDs and DNO notification

A safe, compliant UK AC charger install is governed by half a dozen documents at once. The lead standard is BS 7671 Section 722 (the 18th-edition Wiring Regs section dedicated to EV chargers), with BS EN 61851-1 for the equipment itself and PAS 1899:2022 where the charger is accessibility-graded. Every install needs:

  • Dedicated 32A circuit back to the consumer unit, sized for 7.4kW (or three-phase 32A for 22kW), with cable rated for the design current and ambient.
  • RCD Type A or Type B protection — most modern chargers have an integrated 6mA DC residual-current sensor (so a Type A RCD on the supply side is acceptable). Cheaper or older chargers without internal DC detection need an external Type B RCD.
  • Earthing strategy — either a PEN-fault detection device (built into most current chargers), or an earth rod (TT system) where the supplier earth can’t be relied on. We assess this at survey.
  • DNO notification to SP Energy Networks (central Scotland) or SSEN (north Scotland and the Highlands). Any charger above 3.68kW — so every 7.4kW and 22kW unit — must be notified. Above 16A per phase (so 22kW three-phase) needs prior approval, not just notification.
  • EIC + Building Standards record — issued by an OZEV-style authorised installer (NICEIC, NAPIT or equivalent), with a Scottish Building Standards record up here in Scotland.

How much does an AC charger cost installed in the UK?

A typical 7.4kW smart AC charger fitted at a UK home lands between £800 and £1,200 inclusive. That covers the charger unit, wall-mounting, up to roughly 10 metres of cable run from the consumer unit, RCD protection, DNO notification, commissioning, and the EIC + warranty registration. Three-phase 22kW units run £1,400–£2,200 fitted because both the unit and the heavier cable cost more. Long cable runs over 15m, consumer-unit upgrades, earth-rod additions, or non-standard wall builds add to the total — we price every one of those at survey rather than hiding them in small print.

Compared with paying public-DC prices (a 40kWh EV public-charging once a week at 70p/kWh costs about £580 a year more than the same charge done at home on Octopus Go at 7p/kWh), most home AC chargers pay for themselves inside three years — and that’s before the EV Chargepoint Grant.

EV Chargepoint Grant + off-peak tariffs — the live UK savings stack

The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant gives renters, leaseholders and flat owners with off-street parking 75% off the cost of an AC chargepoint and install, capped at £350 per socket. It runs until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in single-family houses no longer qualify since the original EVHS scheme closed in 2022, but landlord properties (residential and small-commercial portfolios) still claim, and the Home Energy Scotland route is open to Scottish homeowners for the wider energy package.
